Design Research & Prototyping Systems
IDEO New York
At IDEO’s New York office, my work focused on using making as a way to move ideas forward. Physical and digital prototypes were used to take concepts out of abstraction and into forms teams could engage with directly.

I founded and embedded a production design function within the New York Office, working closely with research, strategy, and design teams. The role translated early ideas into tangible artifacts, environments, and prototypes used throughout the lifecycle of a project.

Work often began during research and synthesis and continued as concepts developed. Prototypes ranged from rough studies to full-scale builds, with decisions around material, scale, and finish driven by what needed to be tested or clarified next.

In addition to exploratory prototyping, the work also included producing high-fidelity physical deliverables for clients. This included handmade books, bespoke objects, and other crafted materials used at the conclusion of projects.

Select project details omitted due to client confidentiality.

Retail Prototyping at Scale
Testing retail systems through full scale physical prototypes

This project focused on testing future retail systems by building them at full scale before they existed.

Working with a national convenience retailer, I led the design and construction of a functioning prototype store to test next-generation self-checkout systems. Rather than isolating individual components, the prototype recreated the spatial, behavioral, and operational conditions of a real retail environment.

By building the system physically, teams were able to observe customer flow, staff interaction, pacing, and failure points directly. The result was a production-ready prototype environment that supported clearer decisions and next steps.

Civic Prototyping in Public Space
Testing waste systems through live public deployment

This project tested waste systems in a live public park to understand why existing infrastructure failed to match real-world behavior.

During a two-week sprint in New York City, I worked with the team to design and produce physical prototypes deployed directly in the park. Observation and feedback revealed how volume, mess, and environmental conditions exposed issues that would not have surfaced in a studio setting.

The work continued through multiple rounds of iteration under live conditions, resulting in a scaled prototype used to communicate findings and recommendations to the client.
